Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, commonly known as PrEP, is a preventive treatment for HIV. It involves taking a medication regularly to reduce the risk of HIV infection in individuals who are HIV-negative but at high risk of exposure to the virus. Here are the key points about PrEP:

  • How It Works?

PrEP involves taking a daily pill that contains two medicines (tenofovir and emtricitabine) combined into one pill, sold under the brand name Truvada or Descovy. These medications work by preventing the virus from establishing a permanent infection if someone is exposed to HIV.

  • Effectiveness?

When taken consistently, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection from sex by about 99% and from injection drug use by at least 74%. It is highly effective when taken as prescribed.

  • Who Should Consider PrEP?

PrEP is recommended for individuals who are at high risk for HIV, including:

  1. People with an HIV-positive partner

  2. Those who have multiple sexual partners, especially if the partners' HIV status is unknown

  3. Individuals who inject drugs and share needles

  4. Men who have sex with men (MSM)

  5. Transgender individuals who have sex with men

  • Side Effects?

PrEP is generally well-tolerated, but some people may experience mild side effects like nausea, headaches, and fatigue, which usually go away over time. Keep in mind there are 2 different pills for PrEP, so one can always switch to the other pill if the side effects become too uncomfortable.

  • Access and Use:

To get PrEP, you need a prescription from a healthcare provider. Before starting PrEP, you'll need an HIV test to confirm you are HIV-negative and regular follow-up appointments for HIV testing and monitoring for potential side effects.

  • Importance of Adherence:

For PrEP to be most effective, it is crucial to take it consistently every day. Missing doses can reduce its effectiveness in preventing HIV.
